WHEN YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT YOU HAVE...YOU CAN PAINT YOUR HARDWARE

How often do you come across a lovely piece of hardware only to realize that its color does not fit the look you imagined for your piece. But do not despair: in couple simple steps you can modify the color of the hardware.
First step: cleaning. Even if it seems that your hardware pieces are clean, it is always better to make sure there are not residues of any grease or dirt. Any degreasing cleaning product will do. I use the same products when cleaning my furniture and when cleaning my hardware before painting: Krud Kutter Heavy Duty Cleaner followed by Krud Kutter Prepaint Cleaner/TSP Substitute The main objective is to ensure the best possible adherence of the paint. Let the pieces dry after wiping them.
About the paint: I use paints in spray from RustOleum Universal paints since they combine primer and paint in one and offer an amazing range of colors. My most used / popular colors are: RustOleum Champagne Mist, Gilded Brass and Antique Brass. But there are more colors to choose from, not only in metallic. I love mixing my metallic paints to get the required shade.
Couple words of advice about spraying: shake your can well, really well. Place your hardware on a piece of paper to protect the area (the paint travels further than you think). Do not forget to spray "underneath" you hardware and start by spraying less visible side. Since you do not want the paint "inside the hardware" (it may prevent the screw turning easily) you may use a tiny piece of tape to cover the holes. When spraying, do not keep the can too close and for too long in one place as it may result in too thick layer of paint and visible droplets. Move around: a continuous motion is better than spraying in bursts.
Once one side is dry (this paint dries quickly - especially if you do not apply too much), turn your pieces around and repeat the spraying on the other side. In an hour or 2 your hardware can be attached.
Happy upcycling!
