All the prep stages like cleaning, fixing and priming would not be possible for me without those few products:

• cleaning products: Krud Kutter Heavy Duty Cleaner and Krud Kutter Prepaint Cleaner/TSP Substitute

• various sanding items

• Bondo and putty to fix any unwanted cracks and holes

• primer: Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3® Water-Base Primer

I have a nice collection of various "gadgets" but my "must" list includes:

• orbital sander: Bosch Professional Random Orbit Sander

• drill 

• scrapers: Bahco Ergonomic Carbide Scraper, Bates Paint Scraper 10 in 1 Painters Tool

• cut saw: I love Japanese one Suizan 5" Japanese Flush Cut Saw. One side is to be used with hard wood and another one with soft wood.

Adding or changing legs of your piece might be a great way to modify / modernize its style, make it more practical (if you piece is too low or too high) or to make it optically lighter (I dedicated one of my blog posts to this topic).
