Chest of drawers

Chest of drawers with ridges and decorated drawers' sides

Category:

Since this chest of drawers was made of rubber wood with a lovely light colour, I decided to reveal as much as possible of it and paint only the sides (frame) and top drawers.
I started by sanding off an old paint from all the parts which I wanted to keep bare. My plan was not to stain it but to only apply the varnish to protect it.
In addition to playing with colour-no colour mix, I wanted to add some lines, and if possible contrasting lines. I started by applying IKEA’s armrest trays to the top drawers to get the horizontal lines. I found a few shorter square dowels, a reminder from the previous project, and decided to apply them to the bottom drawer but in the vertical, contrasting position.
I painted the frame, the top drawers and the short dowels using Paisley, from Fusion Mineral Paint.
I kept the original hardware replacing it would be a headache – as there were cavities in all the drawers made specifically for the existing handles). But I removed them and sprayed them in a more appealing Champagne Gold colour.
A final step: I decorated the sides of all the drawers with Garden Waltz decoupage from Redesign by Prima. I do not always decorate the sides of the drawers: it very much depends on the type of rails (sliding system) and quality of wood. But it was a perfect “extra element” in the case of this chest of drawers. Plus, this decoupage design pairs perfectly with Paisley colour.
