Console table

Console table in dark blue with decoupage

Category:

A solid console table, originally from Bassett, but too dark and decorated with ugly knobs. And it had some signs of usage especially on the top.
II started by stripping off and sanding the top but I had to do each gently in order not to damage the veneer. I scuffed the rest.
I wanted to create and elegant but modern piece therefore I reached for my “staple” colour: Midnight Blue from Fusion Mineral Paint. I thought about combining it with some decoupage – applying it on the fronts of both drawers and the “caved in” area on both sides of the console.
After digging through my stash of various decoupage designs, I found a perfect match: Blue Wallpaper Fiber decoupage from Redesign with Prima. The blue used in the decoupage was almost identical to the blue paint I used.
Before applying the decoupage, I painted all the areas where the decoupage would be attached, in off-white. It helps to keep the colours of the decoupage more vibrant/not modified due to the dark background.
From the very beginning I wanted to replace the hardware: since the design of the decoupage had a bit of vintage character I used 2 brass vintage handles. The brass colour corresponds well with dark blue.
The final step: I wanted to lighted up the whole piece by creating a contrasting top surface. And I had a tiny problem: even after stripping and sanding it had some irregularities. To address both issues, I used a paint-wash in Algonquin colour.
I sealed the entire piece (paying attention to the top and the areas with decoupage with matt varnish.
