Sideboard
MCM style sideboard with decoupage
Category:
When I came across this MCM style sideboard, I knew I want to use it as canvas for one of the recent decoupage designs from Mint by Michelle.
Since even bigger format A1 was not big enough to cover even half of the surface, I decided to go ahead with a design which could be divided the into smaller sections and create the composition. My pick: Pale Blossom.
I started by scuffing all the surfaces. Then I opted for using Ultra Grip from FMP to improve the correct adherence of the paint (instead of priming). To match the colours of decoupage I selected, I decided to use a darker color, Homestead Blue, as a frame and lighter grey, Cobblestone, as a base for the decoupage.
Once the piece was painted and dry, I applied the decoupage. Once it was dry I decided to distress it and add more colors to blend the designs in plus add some texture by applying thicker layers of paint. A bigger size stencil brush was a pretty good tool for doing it. The look I was after: an old vintage print.
In some areas, I painted the bottom layer with Homstead followed by Chateau – to be able to achieve the distressed effect with darker color peeking through.
Although originally the sideboard did have any hardware (just the push system) I decided to add the handles. Despite sealing the entire piece with varnish, using handles instead of directly touching (pushing) the same area of the sideboard’s door will allow protecting the surface better.
Few extras: I painted the inside part of all the doors and applied adhesive paper on the shelves.
